Historic Site No.115 (designated on January 21, 1963)
Hwaryeongjeon Shrine was set up next to Hwaseong Haenggung (a temporary royal palace) in 1801 (the 1st year of the reign of King Sunjo) to enshrine King Jeongjo’s portrait. Unlike other shrines in which mortuary tablets are kept, this one was built specifically for King Jeongjo’s descendants to pay homage to him. Regarding the name Hwaryeongjeon, the syllable “Hwa” refers to Hwaseong and “ryeong” to the idea of “returning and greeting one’s parents,” which was from a phrase of Sikyeong, the first Chinese book of poetry. This shrine is a representative structure of the Joseon Dynasty that was made modestly but gracefully, pursuant to King Jeongjo’s wishes.
