Janganmun Gate, Suwon
Built between February 28 and September 5 of 1794 (the 18th year of King Jeongjo’s reign), Janganmun (North Gate) is one of the four main gates of Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon. The word “Jangan” has the dual meaning of “capital city” and “welfare of the people.” This magnificent structure features a hipped-style roof and a semicircular, reinforced defense position attached to its exterior.

Paldalmun Gate, Suwon
Treasure No. 402 (designated on September 3, 1964) Paldalmun is one of the four main gates of Hwaseong Fortress and to Suwon. Treasure No. 403 (designated on September 3, 1964) Hwaseomun is one of the four main gates of Hwaseong Fortress. It was built between July 21, 1795, and January 8, 1796, during the 19th year of King Jeongjo’s reign, as the path leading to Namyangman Bay and the West Coast and has survived intact to the present day. Changnyongmun Gate, Suwon
Built between May 8 and October 17 of 1795 (the 19th year of King Jeongjo’s reign), Changnyongmun (East Gate) is one of the four main gates of Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon. The word “Changnyong” refers to the blue dragon associated with the principles of feng shui. Northeastern Gate Guard Bastion of Hwaseong Fortre...
Jeokdae is a turret erected on a bastion of a fortress.  A jeokdae was built on each bastion on both sides of Janganmun (North Gate) and Paldalmun (South Gate), two of the four main gates of Hwaseong Fortress. The one on the east of Janganmun is as tall as the fortress wall. The three vertical loopholes on the lower side of the bastion were made to allow troops to observe and fire at an approaching enemy.

Jeokdae is a turret erected on each bastion on both sides of a fortress gate. Joekdaes were installed only at the Janganmun (North Gate) and Paldalmun (South Gate) of the four main gates of Hwaseong Fortress. The one on the west of Janganmun is as tall as the fortress wall. The three vertical loopholes on the lower side of the bastion were made to allow troops to observe and fire at an approaching enemy. Each section of the wall had a loophole for firing arrows at enemy troops.

Completed on September 24,1794, in the 18th year of King Jeongjo’s reign, Bukseoporu is one of the cannon forts at Hwaseong Fortress located between Hwaseomun (West Gate) and Janganmun (North Gate). An artillery position was established on the third tier of the bastion on a section of the fortress wall.

This wooden structure was built on a bastion of the fortress wall and finished on February 20, 1795, in the 19th year of King Jeongjo’s reign. Located between Hwaseomun (West Gate) and Janganmun (North Gate), it is one of five sentry posts at Hwaseong Fortress used as vantage points from which to spot and fire upon an approaching enemy.

Northwestern Guard Pavilion of Hwaseong Fortress, ...
Gangnu is a pavilion-like structure positioned on a relatively high part of the fortress, where troops were able to rest and keep watch on the surrounding areas. During emergency situations, it also served as a command post. One of four such pavilions at the fortress, Seobukgangnu was built as a command post at a point opposite Mt. Sukji for troops deployed near Hwaseomun.
