The Suwon Theater Festival was first launched in 1996 under the name “Suwon Fortress International Theatre Festival,” taking place around the Suwon Hwaseong area with a focus on theatre and outdoor performances. Since 2018, the festival has been relocated to Gyeonggi Sangsang Campus and has been centered on Theatre in Public Space, including street theatre and various forms of outdoor performance.
The Suwon Theatre Festival aims to invigorate everyday life by offering citizens new artistic experiences, while actively engaging with social issues to provide a platform where audiences can reflect on and discuss life from the perspectives of artists. By transforming public spaces such as parks into artistic stages, the festival seeks to inspire imaginative reinterpretations of familiar environments.
Furthermore, the festival supports outstanding street arts companies and nurtures emerging artists, contributing to the development of Theatre in Public Space in Korea. It also plays an important role in fostering international cultural exchange through global collaborations.
In 2026, the festival will present a diverse and experimental program of performances in public spaces, offering new artistic experiences to audiences. The program will feature 16 recently created Korean works, including new productions, alongside three French Focus performances that connect Korea and France in celebration of the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Through the 2026 Suwon Theatre Festival, audiences will experience the essence of the festival—“stepping away from everyday life to reflect upon it”—encountering new artistic works that provoke meaningful discussions about our lives.
