The Suwon Theatre Festival began in 1996 under the name "Suwon Fortress International Theatre Festival," primarily featuring plays and outdoor performances around the Hwaseong Fortress area in Suwon. In 2018, the festival venue was moved to the Gyeonggi Sangsang Campus, and it has since focused on "theater in public space," including street theatre.
The Suwon Theatre Festival aims to invigorate the monotonous daily lives of citizens through new artistic experiences. Simultaneously, by actively addressing social issues, it provides a platform to newly view and discuss our lives through the eyes of artists. Furthermore, by utilizing public spaces like parks as artistic stages, it seeks to inspire delightful artistic imagination in everyday spaces. Looking ahead, the Suwon Theatre Festival strives to support outstanding street art groups, discover new artists to promote the development of "theater in public space" in Korea, and contribute to intercultural exchange through international collaborations.
In 2025, the festival will feature experimental and diverse public space theatre performances offering new artistic experiences. To this end, 14 recently produced Korean works, including new creations, and 3 international performances have been invited. Among these are circus performances recently integrated into "theater in public space," vibrant dances that innovatively utilize space, and citizen-participatory theatre where the public becomes the actors. Through these new artistic expressions containing serious debates about our lives at the 2025 Suwon Theatre Festival, citizens will be able to experience the true essence of a festival: "leaving everyday life to look at everyday life.
