무형의 발견과 표현, ‘미지와 조형’

아직 알지 못함을 의미하는 ‘미지’, 미지는 어느 곳에나 존재합니다.
주목해야 할 점은 우리 이미 잘 알고 익숙하게 여기는 것에도 ‘미지’가 존재한다는 사실입니다. 익숙한 풍경의 도시와 자연 속에도, 사회와 개인의 기억 속에도. 예술가는 자신의 밖과 안을 관찰하며 이러한 미지를 ‘발견’하고 자신의 경험과 사고를 통해 미지의 형체를 드러내고 표현하며, 때론 질문을 던집니다.
이번 초대전에서는 작가가 발견한 ‘미지’와 그를 둘러싼 이야기를 마주하고, 예술작품을 통해 익숙한 세계 속에서 새로운 심상을 발견하는 기회를 전달하고자 합니다.

The Unknown and Form
: Discovery and Expression of the Intangible

'The unknown' refers to that which is not yet understood, and it exists everywhere. What we must notice is that the 'unknown' resides even within the things we know well and find familiar-in the common landscapes of the city and nature, and within the memories of society and the individual.

Artists observe both their inner and outer worlds to 'discover' these unknowns. Through their unique experiences and thoughts, they give shape to the unknown, expressing it and, at times, posing questions.

In this invitational exhibition, you will encounter the 'unknown' as discovered by the artist and the stories surrounding it. Through these works, we hope you find an opportunity to discover new imagery and emotions within a familiar world.

‘경계 너머와의 격동적 조우’
가장 격동하는 ‘미지’는 어떤 형태를 띨까. 실존 여부를 논하게 되는 낯설지만 익숙한 것들 사이에서도,
생물과 무생물의 경계를 오가는 것들은 우리로 하여금 보다 원초적이고 격렬한 감정을 야기한다. 그것은 유한성을 가진 생명체가 필멸하지 않는 존재에 대해 느끼는 본능적인 경외이자 두려움, 그로부터 오는 긴장과 떨림에 가깝다. 구민지 작가는 인간과 자연, 생물과 무생물의 경계에서 오래도록 발견되어 온 ‘숨겨진 것들’을 한국의 정서를 바탕으로 그려낸다. 수묵으로 옮겨졌던 어딘가의 산수경, 그 바위·절벽·물길 틈에서 오래된 미지를 끄집어내고 색을 칠한다. 경계 너머의 세계는 다양한 이름으로 불리지만 흑백의 풍경이 색을 입듯, 인식하는 순간부터 존재하게 된다. 이러한 상상 혹은 발견은 삶의 다음, 현재의 너머를 생각하게 함으로써 인간의 지평을 넓힌다.
'A Tumultuous Encounter Beyond the Boundary'
What form does the most tumultuous “unknown” take? Even among things that feel both strange and familiar—things that make us question their very existence—those that move between the living and the non-living stir up more primal and intense emotions within us.
It is close to the instinctive awe and fear that a finite living being feels toward something immortal, and the tension and trembling that arise from them.
Artist Ku Minji portrays the “hidden things” that have long existed at the boundaries between humans and nature, and between the living and the non-living, drawing on Korean sensibility.
She draws out an ancient unknown from somewhere within landscapes once captured in ink wash—from among the rocks, cliffs, and waterways—and breathes color into it.
The world beyond the boundary goes by many names, but much like a black-and-white landscape taking on color, it begins to exist the moment we perceive it.
Such imagination and discovery expand the human horizon by making us think about what lies beyond life as we know it and beyond the present.
