In 1785 (9th year of King Jeongjo's reign), the late Joseon Dynasty, a military unit named Jangyongwi was established to protect the King. With the chief called Jangyongyeong Byeongbang, the unit was formed with the most elite soldiers who safeguarded the King. Jangyongyeong is the royal guard troop of which the scale was expanded in 1793 (17th year of King Jeongjo's reign). Jangyongyeong is largely divided into naeyeong and oeyeong, where naeyeong focuses on protecting the capital city and oeyeong the Suwon Hwaseong Fortress. Led by the chief of Janyeongyeong, Jangyongyeong Guards Ceremony is held every 30 minutes.
