Suwon Cultural Foundation will host the ‘Buksaetong 12 – dongji’ event, an event to reenact the seasonal customs during ‘Dongji’ (winter solstice) which is one of 24 seasonal milestones each year.
Dongji is the 22nd milestone of the 24 and it is on this day when the night is longest and day is shortest during the entire year. After Dongji, the days grow longer so people thought that the sun was resurrecting itself.
That’s why Dongji is also known as ‘Ase’ or ‘Jageunseol’ (minor lunar new year).
The Dongji event gets under way between December 16 and 17 at Suwon Traditional Culture Center and will include a variety of exhibitions and activities to help recreate the tradition of stewing and eating red bean porridge. The event is expected to give Suwon citizens and tourists a chance to cook and eat porridge themselves, think about some of the other customs on other seasonal milestones, and recall some old memories.
Key programs include an introduction about Dongji, an exhibition for illustrated books, an exhibition on customs to drive away bad spirits, a Byeoksa performance (Cheoyongmu dance, Sajachum dance), red bean porridge cooking and sharing, and Dongji Heonmal (making lucky Korean socks).
