Suwon Traditional Culture Center is hosting a “Sesipungsok-Buksaetong” event (a new traditional culture experience program that gets under way at Suwon Hwaseong’s Bukmun Gate) to celebrate “Chilwol Chilseok” day (July 7 on the lunar calendar).
According to legend, Altair and Vega were forced to separate upon angering the Great Jade Emperor. Only once a year, on Chilwol Chilseok day, they were allowed to meet thanks to the help of magpies and ravens. Our ancestors would gather around on Chilseok day to celebrate the reunion of the two lovers, and made wishes to the stars. Also, it was customary for students at village schools to compose poems inspired by Altair and Vega, boys prayed to the heavens to become better scholars, and girls prayed to become better at embroidery or sewing.
The new Chilseok day event will feature a variety of activities and programs. Visitors will have a chance to make noodles, take part in a buckwheat tea tasting program, draw traditional patterns, reenact Altair and Vega’s story, or take photos at the special photo zone. (All of its programs are in Korean.)
Date: August 9 (Fri), 2019 ~ 11 (Sun), August 24 (Sat), August 31 (Sat)
